JCA Suspends Illinois Theater Campaign

2/18/2026

The Jacksonville Center for the Arts (JCA) announced that it will not move forward with exercising its option to purchase the historic Illinois Theater, citing a gap between funds raised to date and the total capital required to complete the project.

Over the past year, JCA has worked diligently with community partners, donors, and supporters to pursue the transformation of the Illinois Theater into a civic center and performing arts venue that would serve as a cultural and economic hub for downtown Jacksonville. The project garnered community enthusiasm to enhance quality of life, preserve historic integrity, and help local businesses thrive.

JCA's goal was to raise $8.8 million to repurpose, restore, and revitalize the iconic theater. While meaningful progress was made in fundraising and community engagement - including a $1 million pledge from Cathy Randall and the endorsement of Jacksonville Main Street - the board determined it could not responsibly proceed with the purchase without securing sufficient financial commitments to support both the renovation costs and initial operations, ensuring the project's long-term sustainability.

"Although this decision is disappointing, it reflects our commitment to fiscal responsibility and stewardship," said Larry Kuster, JCA board president. "We are deeply grateful to the donors, partners, and organizations who supported this effort and believed in the vision for the Illinois Theater."

JCA will continue to evaluate ways to support arts, cultural events, and community programming in Jacksonville, and appreciates the encouragement from stakeholders throughout this process.
